Helping improve eye care in the Caribbean by attending international conference
Dr. Oestreicher (second from left) joined other local and international eye care professionals in a panel discussion on cosmetic eye surgery complications and cosmetic surgery for various ethnic groups, held earlier this year in Barbados.
Earlier this year, Dr. Oestreicher was one of several leading eye care specialists invited to make keynote addresses at an eye care conference in Barbados.
He received the invitation from one of his former trainees, who organized the event and is trying to establish a Regional Centre for Oculoplastics in the Caribbean. “I took the time to attend because I believe in education and I wanted to support my former trainee’s work,” said Dr. Oestreicher.
Dr. Oestreicher delivered six lectures on the following subjects:
- Skull/Orbital Anatomy
- Tumors of the orbit
- Enucleation, evisceration and current practices
- What’s new in implants, stents, sutures and instruments
- Blepharoplasty and CO2 laser
- Pearls on Botox and Fillers
- Complications of Botox, Fillers and Blepharoplasty
All of the presentations were well received, but there was especially high interest in his remarks on blepharoplasty and the repair of blepharoplasty complications (a specialty of Dr. Oestreicher).
Dr. Oestreicher also co-supervised an anatomy teaching lab and gained some insight on the current research into stem cell therapies for eye disease. “It is not immediately applicable, but it could be coming in the future.”
Every year, Dr. Oestreicher attends about three or four international conferences. He is also regularly asked to speak at other events within and outside North America. “I feel an obligation to share what I have learned with my colleagues and the next generation of eye care professionals.”
Elevate Magazine interviews Dr. James Oestreicher and publishes his Asian Blepharoplasty case study
When Elevate Magazine needed an Eye Surgeon for a feature article on how to restore, refresh and rejuvenate eyes, they called Dr. James Oestreicher and documented the experience of a patient who retained Dr. Oestreicher to perform an Asian Blepharoplasty.
In the finished articles, Dr. Oestreicher points out that his Blepharoplasty procedures are popular because they “can effectively turn back the clock” and give the patient “an added boost of confidence” regardless of their age.
More insights and tips are provided in an informative Q&A with the patient who had the Asian Blepharoplasty and Dr. Oestreicher.
Excerpts from Q&A with patient:
Question: Why did you decide on Dr. Oestreicher?
My husband first saw Dr. Oestreicher about 10 years ago for another procedure. We were both very impressed with his skills, dedication and professional manner.
Question: How do you feel about the results?
I’m thrilled! The results were excellent.
Question: What advice do you have for people thinking of getting Blepharoplasty surgery?
Think it over carefully. Find an experienced surgeon that you have total confidence in, and if everything feels right, go ahead and do it!
Excerpts from Q&A with Dr. Oestreicher:
What specific type of surgery did you perform? This patient had an oriental Blepharoplasty, which is a “double eyelid surgery”. This involves making an incision at the desired height of the eyelid crease and creating internal attachments that create a strong reproducible crease.
What were the patient’s biggest concerns about the procedure? This patient wished for symmetry, a natural appearance and a result that would last her whole life.
Was the patient happy with her result? She was extremely pleased with the quality and natural results achieved.
Dr. Oestreicher wins ophthalmology teaching award
There is one more addition to the long list of awards and honors Dr. James Oestreicher has received around the world. It’s the Medical Ophthalmology Teaching Award, presented by St. Michael’s Hospital to Dr. Oestreicher on June 20, 2014.
“Teaching is a passion for me,” said Dr Oestreicher, who not only teaches at St. Michael’s Hospital, but also at many other locations around the world, which he visits annually as a volunteer member of Orbis, an international non-profit, humanitarian organization created to save the sight of individuals who are blind, severely visually impaired or at risk of becoming blind.

Fashion Magazine recently published an article that explores why women want younger looking eyes. Here’s an excerpt that addresses the experience of one woman who considered eyelid surgery after looking at non-surgical, anti aging treatments, products and supplements:
“I long for more dramatic results. Toronto ophthalmic plastic surgeon Dr. James Oestreicher, who lives and breathes eyelids, describes what blepharoplasty—surgical modification of the eyelids and region—entails: the laser cutting; the metal corneal caps; three days of ice-water application; a week of vision blurred by ointments; no bending over; and get your hairy pets away from you!
I am too queasy to go through with it. One of his patients concurs that she had been frightened but was thrilled by the results, unfazed by the recovery process and in fact let her dog sleep on her bed. She speaks reverently of the “Dr. O” look: “He makes this one final stitch at the end and it just pulls everything together – gorgeous.”
"It really does take years off your appearance"
I had the bags under my eyes removed. I also had CO2 laser to smooth wrinkles. It really does take years off your appearance. I was very happy with the outcome and have had lots of positive comments ever since. After surgery, you look pretty beat up but I could go back to work in 2 weeks. The laser treatment takes quite a while to settle - up to six months, but it looks really good now too. I felt Dr. Oestreicher did a great job and I would recommend him for this type of surgery.
