ASIAN EYELID SURGERY
Yes, Dr. Oestreicher performs Asian double
Choosing Dr. James Oestreicher to perform your double eyelid surgery, or Asian blepharoplasty, means you prefer to have your procedure done by one of Canada's foremost eye specialists, not a general Plastic Surgeon, General Ophthalmologist, Dermatologist, Otolaryngologist (ENT), Facial Plastic Surgeon or General Practitioner. While these other medical service providers are permitted to do an Asian eyelid surgery, they do not have the same qualifications as Dr. Oestreicher, who has performed over 20,000 cosmetic eyelid surgeries and specializes in disease and conditions affecting the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (bone cavity around the eye) and adjacent facial structures.
How can my appearance be changed by a
double eyelid operation?
Many Asian patients are interested in the "double eyelid operation", a procedure that creates a more definite upper lid crease or fold and gives the eye a slightly occidental (Western) appearance.
The objective of an Asian blepharoplasty surgery is to create a natural appearing fold at an appropriate height in the lid (if the fold is too high, the appearance will be too occidental).
The upper eyelid in Asian patients is anatomically different than the occidental (Western) upper eyelid, with orbital adipose tissue coming further forward in the lid resulting in an absent or low crease.
In addition, there often is a prominent epicanthal fold (a fold of skin in the inner aspect of the eyelids near the nose) that must be taken into account.
Prior to an Asian eyelid surgery, the patient may have:
- no fold
- a faint fold
- a doubled or tripled fold
The objective of an Asian blepharoplasty is to create a natural appearing fold at an appropriate height in the lid (if the fold is too high, the appearance will be too occidental). In addition, post-operative symmetry is highly important (having the two eyelids equal in appearance) to achieve the attractive result desired by the patient.
It is important to understand that the results of a double eyelid surgery will not be the same for any two people. You can bring a picture to show Dr. Oestreicher what you hope to achieve, but you need to keep in mind that your result may be different, especially if you are trying to copy the look of a movie star who has different facial features than you do and had the benefit of professional photography and make up.
Other reasons for an Asian blepharoplasy or
double eyelid surgery
Older Asian patients may request a blepharoplasty procedure to achieve two goals:
- Reduce excess skin and bulging or puffiness in the upper lids
- Eliminate puffiness in the lower lids
Dr. Oestreicher has the experience, training and skill required to correct the unsatisfactory results of an Asian blepharoplasty done by another medical professional. For example, he can improve indefinite folds, uneven folds or unequal folds.
It is also possible to emphasize or raise the height of an eyelid fold, but it is extremely difficult to reliably lower eyelid folds. See what Dr. Oestreicher can do for you by completing a request for a free consultation or call 416-962-5005.
What are the risks?
There is some inherent risk in every surgical procedure, including eyelid surgery. However, when an eyelid surgery is done by a highly experienced eye specialist like Dr. Oestreicher, the risk of complications is low.
There are more risks for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Dr. Oestreicher will assess your medical condition prior to making any recommendations.
